For the United States Postal Service mail carriers, dog bites are a real on-the-job risk. In 2014, there were 5,767 reported incidents of letter carriers that had been bitten by a dog. In a survey done by the USPS, Fort Worth ranked 16th among the top 30 cities where a mail carrier is most likely to be bitten by a dog. San Antonio was ranked 19th.

Dog attacks are preventable. The problem is that many dog owners refuse to believe that their dog would bite anyone. “There’s a myth we often hear at the Postal Service. ‘Don’t worry, my dog won’t bite.’ Dog attacks are a nationwide issue and not just a postal problem. Any dog can bite and all attacks are preventable through responsible pet ownership,” says USPS Manager of Safety Linda DeCarlo.

Fort Worth has recently implemented a new educational campaign designed to reduce the number of loose dogs on the streets, with hopes of reducing the number of dog bites for city residents as well. The program is called Fence Them, and it targets 10 zip codes across Fort Worth. Officers will actively patrol neighborhoods with high incidents of stray dogs and reported bites, and mailers will be sent to remind residents to control their pets.

The number of postal workers affected by dog bites represents only a tiny fraction of the nearly 5 million people that are bitten by dogs in the US each year. Most of the victims are children.
